Light at its fullest, the beach at the height of the day, figures dissolving into the brightness. Talani paints summer as a condition of near-erasure: color so saturated it approaches white, forms so absorbed in light that their edges soften into the air around them. Oil on board holds the pigment dense and forward, so that the brightness here is not the transparency of watercolor or the haziness of pastel but something more forceful, the light of a Tuscan noon that flattens shadows and makes everything immediate. The Tyrrhenian light he grew up under flattens and intensifies at the same time, and he catches that quality here: the board's surface holding color the way plaster holds pigment in a fresco, dense and slightly chalky, with none of the translucency of canvas. This work would suit any interior that calls for warmth, light, and the serene presence of the sea.
Giampaolo Talani (1955–2018) was born in San Vincenzo, Tuscany, on the Tyrrhenian coast, and trained at the Florence Academy of Fine Arts under Goffredo Trovarelli. After completing his training, his work moved from traditional and fresco painting through sculpture and interpretive exhibition, culminating in his passion for public art — most notably a 20-meter bronze sailor installed in the Port of Miami and installations at Berlin's East Side Gallery. He was exhibited at the Venice Biennale (2011), the Palazzo Vecchio, the Uffizi, and the Pinacoteca del Quirinale, and received the prestigious Lorenzo il Magnifico Lifetime Achievement Award at the Florence Biennale in 2015. The painting comes with a certificate of authenticity.
