A striking and dramatic large-scale 20th century oil on canvas painting by artist Ira Yeager (American 1938-2022) measuring over six feet tall. The grand painting was inspired by Yeager's years living in Corfu, Greece. “When I found the Mediterranean, an awakening and an epiphany emerged—I was home,” Yeager said. There, he explored new artistic techniques that replicated the patina of ancient Greek art (using locally sourced paints that have a tendency to dry and crack), giving his work a distinctive feel. The painting depicts a hooded Greek woman from Corfu in traditional blue and white dress atop a laden donkey rendered in the artist's characteristically loose, gestural, richly worked impasto brushwork. Large mounds of hay are slung across the back of the donkey, while the rider's legs dangle to the side. The painting features beautiful tones of warm ochre, terracotta, dusty pink, sage green against a sun-bleached apricot ground, evoking the artist's travels through Corfu Greece in the Mediterranean and North Africa. The painting is executed in his distinctive eccentric style, blending Country, French Provincial, Folk Art, Swedish, Bohemian, and Maximalist influences. The painting is signed "Ira Yeager" in green pigment, lower left side.
