The Ivory Palace birdcage was crafted by artist Eric Lansdown in 1990 in the style of English Indianate, known as Anglo Indian. He designed this piece as if it could be a part of the furnishing of the Brighton Pavilion. The item has been referred back to the artist for resale by the authority of the owner. It is currently in Pasadena California near where it has been since it was new and featured in an an exclusive gift shop collection that was called Chez Monche.
The item is one of a very limited series of 3 pieces. The surface is finished in realistic ivory cladding, with the exception for the tusk-like legs. The cage is made out of painted wood and metal, the faux ivory cladding is crafted to resemble 18th and 19th century furniture that was covered in real ivory. The artist Eric Lansdown gained experience with ivory restoration and reproduction while working with his mother, the late Carole Lansdown. Carole Lansdown was the restorer for the ivory clad furnishing and artifacts of the Getty family in San Francisco. There are some signs of wear, small chipping of paint at the bottom edge and along a curved side. This amount of wear we consider negligible and does not warrant restoration. The entire piece is distressed to give the ambient patina of aged elegance. If serious damage does occur at some point there is the artist's younger sister in Sonoma California, Christine Wainwright, who is more than qualified to effect restorations.
We can provide additional photos.
We suggest professional movers be employed for the transport of this piece. It is actually quite strong structurally and lightweight. The dome lifts off the roof vault and the body of the structure lifts of of the base. The base has sliding trays in the event that birds are actually housed within it, however this piece has never been used for live animals of any kind.
Measuring at 5 ft tall, 7 ft long, 18in deep.
I consider this absolutely one of my finest designs ever!
Thank you,
Eric Lansdown, the artist Signed by Maker,Labeled with Country of Origin
