Handcrafted as a stylized seashell, the piece combines a rounded, sculptural body with a graduated spiral tip and a deeply recessed interior. The substantial glass gives the shell a strong sense of volume, while the translucent alabastro coloring shifts between turquoise blue, aqua, and softer greenish tones as light passes through its varying thicknesses. Alabastro is a distinctive murano glass treatment associated with softly diffused, opalescent color and a visual character reminiscent of polished alabaster. Archimede seguso explored opaline glass extensively during the postwar period; his gallery records an important opaline collection from the 1950s, encompassing bowls, sculptural forms, and animals. His work of the 1950s was marked by considerable technical research and innovation, while the 1960s continued this experimental approach through new treatments of color and form. The shell format suits seguso's established interest in solid, sculptural glass.
