George Jones & Sons (England, 1861–1951)
George Jones began his career with a seven-year apprenticeship at Minton, followed by work as a traveling salesman for Wedgwood. By 1850, he had established himself as a successful pottery merchant in Stoke-on-Trent. In 1861, he founded his own pottery at the Bridge Works, later expanding to the Trent Potteries in 1865.
Renowned for their majolica, earthenware, and porcelain, George Jones & Sons became a leading name in Victorian and Edwardian ceramics. Their designs often rivaled those of Minton and Wedgwood in quality and artistry. In 1873, Jones’ sons joined the firm, and the company adopted the name George Jones & Sons, registering the “Crescent” mark that became synonymous with their fine china.
The firm collaborated with Bavarian manufacturers like Schumann Arzberg for select porcelain lines, blending English design with continental craftsmanship. Production ceased in 1951, but George Jones pieces remain highly collectible for their elegance, historical significance, and decorative appeal.
