Benjamin Rabier (1864-1939), was a French children’s author, playwright, animator, illustrator, and comic book artist. He became famous for his cartoons for the ‘Laughing Cow’ brand and the character Gédéon the duck.

The plate is titled ‘Au Pays des Surprise’ and bears a caption in French: Le singe-très commode pour aller chercher des noix de roco cet escalier.

In the land of surprises. The monkey—this staircase is very handy for fetching roco nuts.

The monkey is shown climbing a coiled snake to fetch a nut from the tree. A hippo and a tropical bird look on.
