The … Read more Dramatic English George III style slant drop front secretary chest featuring a lacquered case decorated in the chinoiserie taste. The hardwood case has a large drop-front slant door that opens to a writing surface measuring 38 inches wide by 15 inches deep. The desk is fitted with numerous small drawers, pigeon hole cubbies, and two hidden compartments having neoclassical column fronts. The inside of the secretaire is finished in a chic Hermes orange lacquer with Asian motifs in parcel gilt. The case has four large storage drawers with brass bail pulls. The chest is decorated idyllic Asian scenes in a parcel gilt finish which stands out against the black ground. Very heavy and solid with excellent joinery and craftsmanship. Attributed to Burton-Ching, San Francisco, CA. Includes original brass key for lock plates. The lacquer finish has a desirable aged patina with fine craquelure. The finishes are smooth and glossy as seen in photos.
