A louis-philippe style secretary desk, made around 1850, with flamed mahogany veneer and a marble top. The structure is clearly proportioned and calmly structured, with the continuous mirroring of the veneer on the front creating a closed, understated effect. Historical context: the drop-front secretary desk (secrétaire à abattant) developed in the late 18th century and became a common piece of bourgeois furniture in the 19th century. It served to store documents, valuables, and, with its fold-out writing surface, provided a workspace for correspondence and household management. Such pieces were produced in greater numbers during the louis-philippe period; characteristic features include calm forms, large mahogany veneers, and the almost complete absence of hardware in favor of the veneer's natural appearance. Features: behind the drop-front is a structured interior with a shelf, several small drawers, and a leather-covered writing surface. Inside are two concealed compartments that can be opened with a thin tool. The design is in the louis-philippe style with clean, calm lines and minimal ornamentation. Rounded front edges, a recessed upper drawer, and flattened ball feet define the body. The design emphasizes the continuous reflection of the flamed mahogany veneer, which defines the surfaces and carries the overall form.
dimensions: h 143 × w 85 × d 39 cm. Material and condition: mahogany or flamed mahogany veneer, applied marble top, writing surface with green leather, brass keyhole fittings; one key is included. Inside are two concealed compartments. The piece is in age-appropriate, used condition with clear signs of wear. The marble top has dents and a chip on the edge; the leather writing surface shows signs of wear. The piece is stable and complete; signs of age and use are part of its historical character.
