What is a Grandfather Clock?
A grandfather clock is a commanding clock that just may be one of the most recognizable timepieces in the world.
Some notable characteristics are:
They usually measure about 6- or 7-feet tall
They’re also referred to as “longcase clocks” or a “floor clocks”
The long body of the clock is typically constructed from various woods and contains the clock’s gearwork (such as the chimes and the pendulum) The clock face is inset at the top
Most clocks are set on an elaborate base called “toe molding,” and feature an ornate “bonnet” at the top (which is essentially a split pediment embellished with a central finial)
Gustavian grandfather clocks are among the notable exceptions to the split pediment bonnet characteristic. Most Gustavian grandfather clocks feature a rounded top that mimics the curvature of the clock face.
