On a wide expanse of violet and deep-blue sea, a cathedral rises from the water as though the ocean itself … Read more On a wide expanse of violet and deep-blue sea, a cathedral rises from the water as though the ocean itself has conjured it, towers and spires materializing out of layered oil strokes in amethyst, slate, and burnt umber, with a great moon hanging in a pale sky above. The surface is alive with Talani's characteristic mark-making, short sweeps and dragged passages of color that make the water shimmer, while warm ochres and terracotta flicker through the lower half like light caught beneath the surface.

At 34 inches wide and 30 inches tall, this is a work that rewards a large room: above a fireplace, at the end of a hallway, or anchoring a living room where its blues deepen with changing light. Frame included.

Giampaolo Talani (1955-2018) was born in San Vincenzo, on the Tuscan coast, and trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence under Goffredo Trovarelli. He became one of the foremost practitioners of fresco in contemporary Italian art, completing public commissions at Florence's Santa Maria Novella station, the Quirinale Palace in Rome, and for the Italian Senate. He exhibited at the 54th Venice Biennale and received the Lorenzo il Magnifico Lifetime Achievement Award in 2015.
