The Virgin is portrayed frontally in elaborate ceremonial dress, holding the Infant Jesus and surrounded by a highly ornamental devotional composition. Richly patterned textiles, delicate gilt detailing and theatrical drapery create the distinctive sense of visual splendour associated with the Cuzco School tradition. The composition displays the characteristic fusion of European Baroque religious iconography with indigenous Andean artistic traditions that distinguished painting produced in and around Cusco. Formal symmetry, restrained facial expressions and abundant decorative ornament combine to create an image intended both for devotion and visual magnificence. The deep palette of greens and reds is beautifully complemented by extensive gold detailing, particularly throughout the garments and surrounding decorative elements. The intricate treatment of the textiles and ornament demonstrates the highly decorative character for which Cusqueña religious painting became celebrated. Executed in oil on canvas, the painting is presented within an impressive gilt frame and protected behind glass, enhancing its jewel-like appearance and providing considerable decorative presence. Dating to the late 19th century, circa 1880, this evocative work continues the important artistic traditions established in colonial Peru and demonstrates the enduring popularity of Cuzco School religious imagery well into the 19th century. A compelling example of Peruvian devotional painting, combining rich colour, intricate gilded decoration and powerful religious iconography. An impressive addition to a collection of Latin American, religious or Spanish Colonial-inspired art, as well as a striking statement piece for a refined interior. See less
