A companion to History Ambiguous in both format and mood, this horizontal canvas centers on a female nude whose relationship to the picture plane is one of deliberate instability. She is not performing for the viewer, not avoiding the viewer: she is somewhere else entirely, absorbed in the story the title names but refuses to tell. Talani's figure work at its most characteristic involves exactly this quality of withheld narrative, and here he achieves it with considerable formal authority. The horizontal format gives the figure room to extend and contract within the picture plane, and Talani uses it with the structural confidence of a painter trained in the discipline of fresco, where every compositional decision is permanent. A highly accomplished figurative work with broad placement possibilities.
Giampaolo Talani (1955–2018) was born in San Vincenzo, Tuscany, on the Tyrrhenian coast, and trained at the Florence Academy of Fine Arts under Goffredo Trovarelli. After completing his training, his work moved from traditional and fresco painting through sculpture and interpretive exhibition, culminating in his passion for public art — most notably a 20-meter bronze sailor installed in the Port of Miami and installations at Berlin's East Side Gallery. He was exhibited at the Venice Biennale (2011), the Palazzo Vecchio, the Uffizi, and the Pinacoteca del Quirinale, and received the prestigious Lorenzo il Magnifico Lifetime Achievement Award at the Florence Biennale in 2015. The painting comes with a certificate of authenticity.
