The square format, nearly four feet on each side, gives each figure room to exist independently while the wall behind them creates a shared ground that holds the composition in place. Color runs warm and dusty, the palette of Tuscan summer at its height, and the board surface absorbs the oil pigment into the same dense, matte register that Talani associated with fresco pigment laid into wet plaster. A major Talani work at the largest scale he habitually worked. His training in fresco gave him an unusual intimacy with the wall as both surface and setting, and that intimacy shows in the way these figures inhabit their background: at home in a way that purely easel-trained painters rarely achieve. A centerpiece acquisition for any significant interior.

Giampaolo Talani (1955–2018) was born in San Vincenzo, Tuscany, on the Tyrrhenian coast, and trained at the Florence Academy of Fine Arts under Goffredo Trovarelli. After completing his training, his work moved from traditional and fresco painting through sculpture and interpretive exhibition, culminating in his passion for public art — most notably a 20-meter bronze sailor installed in the Port of Miami and installations at Berlin's East Side Gallery. He was exhibited at the Venice Biennale (2011), the Palazzo Vecchio, the Uffizi, and the Pinacoteca del Quirinale, and received the prestigious Lorenzo il Magnifico Lifetime Achievement Award at the Florence Biennale in 2015.
