Ch. Field Haviland.
A complete and magnificent
formal service for twelve in the most imperious of colorways — deep forest green and lavish gold encrustation on luminous white Limoges porcelain — made by one of France’s most storied makers, Ch. Field Haviland, bearing the prestigious Label de Qualité mark reserved for their finest production.
Forty-eight pieces in perfect pattern harmony: twelve dinner plates, twelve salad plates, twelve cups, and twelve saucers. Every piece presents the same opulent border — a broad outer band of richly encrusted gold scrollwork, acanthus leaves, and classical foliate arabesques encircling a bold forest green band alive with delicate gold fleur-de-lis and continuous scroll motifs. The wells are pristine blanc de Limoges, finished with a fine gold rim. The cups carry the identical banding, so the table tells one unified, uninterrupted story of French luxury.
This service has been cherished in the same family for over 70 years — acquired in the mid-20th century and carefully preserved across generations. That single-family provenance is increasingly rare, and it shows in the condition.
This is the kind of service that was commissioned for great houses, set on tables where the conversation was as serious as the china. The forest green and gold palette — saturated, unapologetic, deeply formal — belonged to the dining rooms of the Belle Époque and the Edwardian era, when a properly dressed table was its own form of architecture.
The backstamp — Ch. Field Haviland · Limoges France in deep red, crowned with the Label de Qualité cartouche — dates production to the post-1900 period, consistent with the Edwardian taste for heavily gilded ceremonial porcelain at the luxury tier of the Haviland range.
Complete services of this quality, in this condition, with this provenance, are increasingly rare. Most have been broken up, sold piecemeal, or simply used into imperfection. This one has not.
