These art deco bookends, signed by artist jamar, are elegant and sophisticated pieces, exemplifying the characteristic style of the 1920s-1930s. Each bookend depicts a panther, an emblematic art deco figure embodying power, grace and elegance.
the panthers are sculpted in spelter, a metal alloy often used at the time for its malleability and finishing qualities. Spelter accurately captures the details of the felines, from the taut muscles and dynamic curves of their bodies, to the fierce yet refined expressions on their faces. The spelter finish is usually patinated to imitate bronze, adding visual richness and depth to the sculpture.
each panther stands on a marble base, which contrasts beautifully with the metal sculpture. The marble, with its natural veins and lustre, adds a touch of luxury and robustness to the whole. The plinths are probably rectangular or slightly rounded, providing a stable, solid base to support the books.
the signature “jamar” is on the bottom of the panther, confirming the authenticity and origin of these bookends. Jamar is a renowned artist in the art deco style, and his works are sought after by collectors for their artistic quality and representativeness of the period.
these bookends are not only functional, but also art objects in their own right. They add a touch of glamour and elegance to any bookcase or shelf, while embodying the bold, modern spirit of art deco. The spelter panthers, proudly placed on their marble pedestals, testify to the craftsmanship of the period and the artist's keen eye for detail and aesthetics.
