These Antique Bookends were produced by the Armor Bronze Company in 1922.
The feature the classical Greek mythological female Pandora. She was given by the gods a large storage jar (pithos), mistranslated in later eras as a "box", and which was filled with all the evils, diseases, and hardships of the world. Although forbidden to open it, her curiosity drove her to open it. Released were all the miseries to plague humanity.
The matching pair are produced in bronze with black painting to various background areas.
Like many of these bookends with figurines, they were probably designed by the famous American sculptor J. Ruhl, though where his signature is, at the lower left and right of the figure, has been soldered over for an unknown reason, as shown.
They have a beautiful original patina, and form exquisite compositions as bookends. There have been some minor bumps slightly damaging one of the pieces, as shown.
