A striking pair of oversized turquoise glazed ceramic horse bookends showcasing bold Art Deco-inspired design and exceptional sculptural presence.
Standing an impressive 10 inches tall, these beautifully modeled horses feature elongated necks, stylized geometric manes, softly closed eyes, and graceful flowing chest details. Their streamlined silhouettes evoke the architectural animal forms popularized during the Art Deco era while also complementing Mid-Century Modern, Hollywood Regency, Palm Beach, and contemporary interiors.
Whether displayed as functional bookends or as standalone sculptures on a mantel, console, or library shelves, this pair makes a sophisticated decorative statement. The rich turquoise glaze displays beautiful tonal variation, adding depth and movement across the sculpted surfaces.
Although unsigned, the quality of the modeling and glazing suggests a well-executed mid-century studio or art pottery production, likely dating from the 1950s–1960s.
Condition
Very good vintage condition with age-appropriate wear.
One horse has a small chip located beneath the forward tip of the mane. Due to its location, the chip is largely concealed and is not readily visible when the pair is displayed from the front. There are also a few minor glaze nicks and manufacturing imperfections consistent with vintage ceramic production. No cracks or repairs noted. The pair presents beautifully and displays exceptionally well.
