Brutalist design has its roots in the Mid-Century movement in Brutalist architecture, with the fitting name derived from the French term for “raw concrete.” The style complements the massive, fortress-like characteristics of the architecture with square, chunky wood pieces in a darker color palette. Pick out a piece of Lane furniture with blocky, almost cubist, uses of geometry and shapes. Or check out the heavy, edgy metalwork in Brutalist light fixtures and sculptures by Tom Greene.
