Griffin, Smith & Hill Etruscan Majolica Begonia pattern leaf plate produced in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, during the 1880s. Molded in the form of a begonia leaf, the plate displays the naturalistic modeling and richly coloured majolica glazes associated with the firm's Etruscan ware production.
The reverse bears the period Etruscan Majolica mark encircling the GSH logo together with a capital letter designation, consistent with examples dating to circa 1880–1889. The Begonia pattern remains among the most recognizable designs produced by Griffin, Smith & Hill during the late nineteenth century and reflects the strong influence of naturalistic botanical forms in American majolica of the period.
