New or antique, blown glass bowls exist in a category all to themselves. The transparency and colors entice, and the fluid shape creates a sense of movement.
Those who’ve done their research — or even a quick browse — will encounter Murano glass bowls and dishes. Used in Italy for centuries, this technique is behind the stunning glass centerpieces you spot in many homes and living areas.
What is Murano Glass?
Although some may refer to this technique or effect as “Venetian glass,” Murano is more specific. Originating from the island of Murano, a section of Venice, this technique dates back to the Romans and, after being revived by local artisans, combines soda, lime, silica and potassium in a high-temperature furnace. A liquid consistency results, and from here, various minerals or even gold or silver are added to create the series of colors you see. Blowing by mouth or with various tools, followed by shaping and polishing the glass, forms the final result.
