Not every pattern will tell a story. However, when you spot antique Chinese bowls, there’s a bit of history behind the design and style of art you’re seeing.
What is Chinoiserie?
No matter the era, the technique on those Oriental decorative bowls you notice on someone’s console table frequently dates back to a 17th century décor style called Chinoiserie. More specifically, these Chinese-influenced bowls were a European creation based on the French rococo style — itself characterized by detailed, intense ornamentation. Seen in the many vintage bowls we carry, Chinoiserie combines this aesthetic with a European interpretation of Asian art, life and culture. Trade between Europe and China resulted in the proliferation of this style.
Although you’ll encounter such antiques, much of the Chinoiserie bowls you spot today tend to be an inspiration of an inspiration: late 19th century and early 20th century admiration for this design style, with interest then revived in the 1980s and ‘90s.
