A fabulous find. Imagine having all of the beauty of an antique, enamel-faced, carved, repousse clock, without the burden of winding or the weight of mechanisms, etc.? This clock is clearly the best of both worlds. It's stunningly beautiful with the authentic mid 1800s, intricate, brass carving frame; it has now been converted to have the convenience of being battery-operated. It has the wow factor.
Repoussé is a metalworking technique in which a malleable metal is ornamented or shaped by hammering from the reverse side to create a design in low relief. This brass framing features two long-neck birds nibbling at a pile of fruit in a compote. Repoussé flowers in each lower corner, as well. Black Roman numerals on the white enamel clock face. The brass metal frame is thin in order for the shaping of the design. The enamel clock face is in good condition, with one small chip near the Roman numeral VIII (8). Hairlines across the face due to age. The enamel has retained its gloss over the decades. The brass around the enamel has some dents as should be expected. At the top of the enamel clock face is the French surname in black "Perard", and at the bottom of the clock face is "Savenay". Savenay is a small commune in the Loire-Atlantique department in western France which is part of the Pays de la Loire region.
These brass frames with enamel clockface were originally part of a French grandfather clock. This clock was most likely a gift to the Perard family who lived in Savenay. The brass frame with white enamel clock is beautiful on any wall in your home. A piece of French history.
Frame with clock measures 15.5 inches tall overall and 9.5 inches wide at the bottom. The white enamel clock face measures 8.5 inches in diameter.
Manufactured in Franche-Comté, France, this clock was more than likely commissioned for a wealthy family.
There is some crazing to the face. Please do view the photos.
