Subject & Attribution
Romanticised early-19th-century marine battle scene centred on the American frigate USS Constitution (“Old Ironsides”) in close action with HMS Cyane and HMS Levant. Oil on canvas, relined; English School, circa 1830. Offered in the manner of Thomas Buttersworth (1768–1842). Unsigned.

Executed in the heroic marine tradition, the composition prioritises legible ship silhouettes, dynamic sea modelling, layered smoke and dramatic light to convey the physicality and confusion of a close engagement.
