Charles II Period English Oak Chest of Drawers, c. 1670–1690
An important late 17th-century English oak chest of drawers, dating to the Charles II period (c. 1670–1690). This compact yet architectural chest is distinguished by its bold applied geometric moldings — the quintessential decorative motif of the period.
Configured with two short drawers above three long drawers, the chest divides into two sections for ease of transport, a constructional feature characteristic of genuine 17th-century examples. The drawers are oak-lined, joined with early dovetails, and retain their original primitive linings. Paneled sides and a boarded top further reinforce the authenticity of the piece.
The chest has acquired a deep, glowing patina over the centuries. Later sympathetic brass drop handles have been fitted, while the original style of escutcheons appears to survive. The feet are later replacements, as is often the case with examples of this age.
This is a true period survivor of English domestic furniture, reflecting the transition from the coffer to the chest of drawers. It would have been a prized possession in its day, conveying status through its costly molded ornamentation and solid oak construction.
