Constructed in the traditional joined and panelled manner, the front is divided into four recessed panels, each decorated with a geometric lozenge centred by a stylised carved flowerhead. Carved vertical muntins divide the panels, while a scrolling foliate frieze runs across the upper rail beneath the lid. The substantial front stiles continue to form the legs and are further embellished with carved decoration.

The hinged plank top has a moulded and decoratively worked edge and displays particularly attractive wear, revealing warmer tones of the oak beneath the dark historic surface. These variations, scratches and areas of wear give the piece the character expected from a piece of furniture that has been in use for more than three centuries.

Opening the lid reveals a generous storage interior with a narrow compartment to one side, useful for smaller objects. The reverse retains traditional framed and panelled construction and displays the more utilitarian workmanship typical of period country furniture.

At 126cm wide, the coffer is substantial enough to make an architectural statement without being excessively deep, making it particularly useful in a hallway, living room or at the foot of a bed.
