A rare and marvelous Sepik River Crocodile stool, hand carved from a single piece of solid wood carved in high relief, stylized and finely decorated and a base supported by arched legs.
The "orators stool" is more aptly described as a debating pulpit and would have been located in the spirit house in the center of a Iatmul village on the Sepik River. It was the seat for the principal ancestral spirit that authorises village orators to carry on their debates. It is amongst the most important and prestigious treasures of the Middle Sepik cultures.
