Signed and dated 1982 Hano Clown Kachina by Hopi artist Clarence Cleveland of Second Mesa, Arizona.
This highly expressive hand-carved figure features Cleveland’s distinctive interpretation of the Hano Clown, with a black-and-white striped body, fur-trimmed headdress, tasseled horns, one painted sneaker and one bare foot. The figure holds a blue spotted pitcher in one hand and matching cup in the other, with additional leather details completing the composition.
The underside of the wood base is hand-inscribed “Hano-Clown / Clarence Cleveland / 2nd Mesa, AZ / 1982.”
Approximately 20 inches tall including the base. A striking and whimsical example of late-20th-century Hopi carving with wonderful sculptural presence and character.
Vintage condition with age-related surface wear, paint wear and natural cracking/checking to the wood base. Please review photographs for condition and details.
