An antique Chinese provincial daybed from the late Qing dynasty, about 1880–1920, in elm with its original red-brown lacquer finish.
The back is a two-tier gallery of hand-turned spindles set with pierced, carved scroll panels. The seat is a finely woven herringbone rattan mat, finished at one end with a rattan-wrapped bolster capped by carved shou longevity medallions. Below the seat is a carved scrolling-vine apron panel flanked by pierced cloud-scroll spandrels and short spindles. It stands on square legs joined by a humpback stretcher.
The piece is built with traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery. It works as a daybed, an entry bench, or a sculptural sofa, and a cushion adds comfort. It pairs well with modern, traditional, or eclectic interiors.
