Neoclassicism meets Gustavian style in this simply gorgeous vintage upholstered French Gustavian Neoclassical/Directoire single daybed painted in classic celadon wash, with brass tacking and matching bedspread. Great for lounging, reading a book or hosting an extra guest! This beautiful symmetrical daybed reflects the calm muted palette of Gustavian furniture, the detail and timeless elements found in empire/neoclassical design and overall high levels of craftsmanship. The day bed is framed by matching head- and foot-boards which feature a center pediment with a matching double handled covered neoclassical urn surrounded by additional detailing. The bedposts--set slightly apart from the center piece- are tapered, fluted and turned between two diamond block pieces with turned feet below and rounded "crown" finials at the top. The custom padded upholstery is a classic striped heavy matelasse cotton fabric in camel, off-white and navy blue set into each end with brass tacks. A custom cushion and matelasse bedspread in matching fabric with cut outs for a perfect fit is included in the sale. Cushion and box spring support measure approximately 74"w x 31"d on metal braces. High quality construction, solid and heavy, likely from the early 20th century or possibly the late 19th century, repainted celadon at some point. Modifications also appear to include the metal braces (the bed rails originally had grooves for bed slats, as shown). Although the origin and maker are unknown, this piece matches French Directoire/Empire daybeds found elsewhere. Purchased in the late 1990s/early 2000s from an antique store in Boston. Shipped as is, does not come apart.
Condition is consistent with age and use. The bed frame is solid and is in excellent shape. At some point, the bed was repainted in a celadon wash; there are minor chips on two finials as shown, the rails are unfinished on the inside, and there are minor paint scuffs on the feet, as shown. The interior metal braces have some rust. None of these affect use or display! Suggest cleaning coverlet before use to remove water stain on inside and any dust, etc.. Please see photos for details and condition. Cushion and coverlet should be cleaned before using.
Measures approximately 80" w x 34 1/2" d x 34 1/2" h. The seat height with approximately 10" of inserted box spring and mattress would be approximately 17 1/2" h.
