Offered is a mid 20th Century matte glazed caramel-colored bowl created by Lietzke Porcelains, the pottery studio of American ceramic … Read more Offered is a mid 20th Century matte glazed caramel-colored bowl created by Lietzke Porcelains, the pottery studio of American ceramic artists, the husband and wife collaborations of Luke (b. 1906 - d. 2000) and Rolland (b. 1909 - d. 1996) Lietzke.

Husband and wife team Rolland and Luke Lietzke produced ceramics together for 30 – 40 years. They showed their works at their personal gallery, Lietzke Porcelains (founded in 1948), which was attached to their studio in Mogadore, Ohio.

Luke was an art major at Michigan State University and completed postgraduate work at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Rolland also graduated from Michigan State University and did postgraduate work at Woodstock and Traphagen Schools of Design, New York. Luke was the Curator of Design (1946-1964) at the Akron Art Museum and Rolland was a textile designer in New York and later was in charge of design and development for major rubber companies in Akron.

“We are designers by nature and training. We evolved, with dedication, in the Bauhaus influence period. Before our introduction to porcelain, clay had had no appeal for us. Porcelain expressed the potential for the possible clean, crisp forms we wished to express stated the Lietzkes during an interview in 1984.”

Their style was evidently mid Century modern by design - namely crafting abstract shapes, often featuring distinct glazes, geometric motifs, or organic forms (such as this bowl).

Pieces of their are housed in prominent institutions like the Carnegie Museum of Art, the Canton Museum of Art, and The Art Institute of Chicago.

The bowl measures 9.25" in diameter, slightly above 2" tall, and has a flat round base that is 2.25" in diameter. See less
