An evocative antique Syrian Damascus brass bowl, circa 1890–1915, crafted in the Mamluk Revival tradition that flourished in the Middle East around the turn of the 20th century. The compressed bulbous vessel is densely hand engraved with bold Arabic thuluth-style calligraphy, intricate geometric diaperwork, scrolling arabesques, floral motifs and contrasting copper-toned details.
Inspired by the celebrated inlaid metalwork of medieval Mamluk Egypt and Syria, Damascus craftsmen revived these richly ornamented forms for an international clientele during the late Ottoman period. The calligraphy appears to be decorative benedictory or proverbial Arabic, a characteristic feature of Damascus Revival metalwork.
A richly patinated example with tremendous decorative presence as a cachepot, centerpiece, jardinière or sculptural tabletop vessel.

Brass exhibits extensive naturally developed patina, oxidation, darkening, discoloration and scattered … moreGood antique condition with substantial age-related surface character throughout. Brass exhibits extensive naturally developed patina, oxidation, darkening, discoloration and scattered verdigris, particularly within recessed decoration and to the interior. Exterior displays rubbing, scratches, small abrasions and areas of wear and loss to the original contrasting surface decoration/inlay. Scattered reddish copper-toned areas remain visible. Underside shows pronounced oxidation, finish wear, discoloration, scratches and areas of surface loss consistent with age and use. Minor irregularities and small distortions to the rim and body are consistent with hand manufacture and age. Interior has considerable dark oxidation and accumulated surface wear. No obvious major structural cracks or losses observed. Unpolished and retaining an attractive aged surface. Please refer to photographs for additional condition details. less
