The pair of Royal Doulton stoneware vases by Bessie Newbury, a ceramic artist working at Royal Doulton. The shouldered vases with tapering body and short collar neck exemplify the Art Nouveau movement that flourished from the 1890s through the early 1920s, characterized by organic forms and stylized floral motifs. comparable to her work around 1912. The base of both vases are impressed with the Royal Doulton mark used form 1902 to 1922. There is also an impressed model number of 7946.
Bessie Newbury was one of the gifted artist who worked in the Royal Doulton. She was listed in 1882 as a Junior Assistant at Doulton's Lambeth factory but her talent was recognized and was promoted to Senior Assistant. By 1911 she was working as a Supervisor and began designing original work until 1924. This particular design of stylized flowers on the vases is comparable to her work around 1912.
