An authentic 1960s George Zee & Co. expanding dry bar cabinet, crafted in richly figured teak with brass corner mounts, circular longevity medallions and fitted cocktail storage. The compact cabinet opens to reveal an unusually complete interior with removable bottle racks, pierced geometric fretwork, two utility drawers, lower bottle-storage compartments and an extending work surface.
The hinged top lifts to form a tall decorative backsplash centered by a brass Chinese longevity symbol, while the upper serving surface provides room for decanters, glassware and cocktail preparation. When closed, the cabinet has the clean proportions of an Asian Modern storage cabinet, making it equally suitable for a dining room, living room, library or sophisticated home office.
Retains the original George Zee & Co. metal manufacturer’s label from the company’s 83 Hung To Road factory in Kwun Tong, Kowloon, Hong Kong.
JUNE'S THOUGHTS
One of the qualities I appreciate most about this cabinet is how substantial it feels. George Zee didn't build these as lightweight accent pieces—the teak is heavy, kiln-dried, and hand-finished. The entire cabinet has the reassuring feel of quality craftsmanship. It opens beautifully for entertaining, yet closes into a handsome, compact cabinet that fits comfortably into today's interiors.
Also, one of the first things I look for in vintage bars is whether they still retain all of their original removable fittings. More often than not, bottle racks, dividers, trays, or panels have disappeared over the decades. This George Zee cabinet is a wonderful exception, remaining remarkably complete with its removable bottle racks, pierced panel, serving shelf, and fitted storage components still present. Complete examples like this are increasingly difficult to find, making this cabinet especially rewarding for both collectors and anyone who appreciates well-made furniture.
