The porter’s chair—sometimes called a chaise à porteur—originated in France during the late 17th century and was designed as a sheltered seat for the household porter who attended the main door of a grand estate. Its enveloping hood protected the servant from drafts while waiting to announce guests, a necessity in the unheated stone vestibules of the period. By the 18th century, similar forms appeared in England, often stationed in manor entrances or inns. The high back and deep sides not only signaled status but also created an acoustically private space before the concept of interior insulation.
