This is a depiction of a monkey dressed in monk's robe and carring a staff made of iron. In Japanese art, monkeys sometimes appear dressed as monks or pilgrims in humorous, symbolic of moral scenes. A staff often suggests pilgrimage, ascetic practice or travel. Another interpretation could be the Monkey Kiing SUn Wukong from the Chinese classic Journey to the West. In Japan, this figure Son Goku became very popular in carvings, netsuke, and decorative arts.
The figure is seated on its haunches. The right hand is rested on the right knee and held the staff together with the left hand. It wears a cloth hat and a loose fitting kimono with long sleeves. The material is a sold piece of wood and the monkey's face is well defined with what appears to be mother of pearl eyes. The staff is made of iron.
Monkeys in Japan can symbolize cleverness, protection or human folly.
It is hard to determine the age of Folk art carving. Sculptures made of hardwood does not age much, so the dating is based on style. Considering my age and my observations of art and antique objects, I will say for certain it is before my time.
