They are crafted by … Read more Usaburo Kokeshi (卯三郎こけし) refers to a celebrated style of sosaku (creative or modern) Japanese wooden doll. They are crafted by master artisans in Gunma Prefecture, Japan, and are distinguished by their plump bodies, feminine features, and iconic dark bobbed hairstyles. Usaburo dolls differ from the traditional Kokeshi dolls by the elongated shape and colorful kimonos, as compared to the cylindrical and compact shapes of the traditional dolls. The distinctive expressions on the dolls' faces and their heights are heads above. The Usaburo workshop is known for their high quality, handcrafted Kokeshi dolls. Elegance from the elongated shapes and creative designs are hallmarks of the Usaburo workshop.

These two dolls are made from very blond wood, and without the dark hair. They may not have the same maker, but the style is very similar, The taller doll could represent the mother. The decoration on her kimono appears to be etched in and color. The small doll, the daughter has a hand painted daisy design on her kimono. Like the traditional Kokeshi dolls, they both have helmet like wig which covers most of their faces, making them very demure with their downcast eyes.. On the bottom of the taller doll is a two character red seal, indicating the name of the artist written in seal script. It is not identified.

Kokeshi dolls are widely popular because they symbolize good luck, protection against evil spirits, and a wish for the healthy growth of children.
