This antique bentwood chair dates to the early 20th century and is attributed to Mundus, one of the prominent Austro-Hungarian bentwood furniture manufacturers associated with the Vienna Secession period. The chair features elegant curved bentwood construction, decorative turned back splats, and a beautifully detailed floral seat that lends it a distinctive Art Nouveau character.
The graceful frame showcases the craftsmanship that made Central European bentwood furniture so influential at the turn of the century. Flowing curves are balanced by the more architectural vertical back elements, creating a silhouette that feels both refined and approachable. The seat is decorated with a stylized floral motif featuring iris-like blooms and cattails, adding warmth and visual interest while reflecting the naturalistic themes popular during the Art Nouveau era.
I especially love the combination of the sculptural bentwood frame and the decorative seat. While many antique bentwood chairs were designed for cafés and everyday use, this example feels more artistic and expressive, making it equally appealing as an accent chair, vanity chair, hallway chair, or decorative addition to a collected interior.
The underside retains a factory stamp, and based on the construction, decorative details, and surviving markings, the chair is believed to have been produced by Mundus or a related Central European bentwood manufacturer during the Vienna Secession period.
