A striking 19th century (likely dating circa 1860–1890) French Comtoise (Morbier) wall clock featuring richly embossed gilt brass ornamentation with grapevine, wheat, and harvest motifs surrounding an enamel dial signed “Dumas à St Symphorien-de-Lay.”
Originating from the Franche-Comté tradition of provincial French clockmaking, this sculptural weight-driven clock retains its elongated decorative pendulum surround and original cast iron weights, giving the piece remarkable architectural presence. The repoussé brass decoration is especially detailed, with abundant clusters of grapes, flowing foliage, and sheaves of wheat symbolizing prosperity and the harvest.
The enamel dial with Roman numerals is framed by an ornate brass bezel and fitted with elegant pierced hands. The clock case retains its black painted iron housing behind the decorative façade, consistent with traditional Comtoise construction of the late 19th century.
Equally compelling as functional horology (see condition notes) or purely decorative wall sculpture, this piece works beautifully in French country, European farmhouse, château-inspired, Belgian linen, rustic luxury, and collected English country interiors.
A highly decorative and substantial example with exceptional vertical scale and presence.

Surface wear, oxidation, and patina throughout. Movement untested and assumed not to be in working condition; functionality not guaranteed. Decorative brass elements present beautifully with strong overall visual impact. Original key, hands, doors, and (heavy!) cast iron weights all present. Hands not currently secured to the face and are only able to be displayed in the 6:30 position. Can easily be fixed by adding a small nut. Bottom possibly missing a decorative brass element, but absence does not detract from decorative value. A tassel is attached to show additional decorative possibilities. See photos.
