Rare early 20th Century cockatoo terracotta figurine on bowl. The piece features a detailed parrot perched on a branch that wraps around a bowl base by Johann Maresch Factory.
The design is similar in style to cold-painted bronze figures produced by Austrian artists like Franz Xaver Bergmann.
On bottom it is marked "Austria" with initials JMI and an identification number 2502.
Johann Maresch was a well-known Bohemian/Austrian manufacturer based in Aussig (now Ústí nad Labem, Czech Republic), specializing in terracotta, majolica, and earthenware, active from roughly 1890-1910. Marks: Their pieces often feature impressed marks "JM" or "J.M.", frequently accompanied by the word "Austria" and a mold number. Some items were marked with "Musterschutz" (meaning patent-protected). They are known for figural items, beer steins, wall plaques, and ornamental vases.
