Chinese soapstone carvings became particularly popular during the Qing Dynasty (CE 1644 - 1912) and continued through the early 20th century. Soapstone, valued for its soft texture and ease of carving allowed artisans to create intricate decoration objects featuring traditional motifs such as flowers, birds, and natural scenes. These triple vases were often used as brush pots or incense holders in scholars' studios, reflecting the refined aesthetic of Chinese literati culture.
This beautifully carved triple vase most likely has a mid 20th century date, It was during the early period of the People Republic of China where the sale of Chinese arts and crafts generated sales for foreign cash into the economy. The flowers appear to be peonies, symbol of beauty and wealth and queen of flowers of China. The birds resting on the flowers are magpies, harbingers of good fortune.
The design of the soapstone carving is well designed, with a pot of peonies situated between three vases. The tan color is very even throughout. A good feature even color tone is preferred.
