If, like Elon Musk, you are frequently seen wearing a special edition watch designed to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the first Swiss watch in space, move along. Although harking from an earlier “Gilded Age,” this timepiece is the antithesis. On offer is a French Rococo-style, gilt-bronze cartel wall clock. It’s big. It’s heavy. And it tells time with grandeur. True to the Rococo aesthetic, the case is embellished with sculptural floral motifs, scrolling foliage and, most delightfully it is topped by a charming figure of a Chinese boy—a common theme in 18th-century French design that was revived in the mid to late 19th century.
The dial face is white enamel with Roman numerals for hours and Arabic numerals for five-minute intervals. The enamel dial is signed "Tiffany & Co." and "France."
The mark "SH" on the clock’s mechanism refers to the French clockmaker Samuel Marti, a highly regarded clock manufacturer in Paris during the 19th century. Marti often collaborated with high-end retailers like Tiffany & Co. to produce quality movements for their cases. Hang this on your wall to show the world your reverence for the gift of time.
