A sophisticated Hollywood Regency flip-top bar cabinet dating to the 1970s, executed in an ebonized finish with classical Greek key frieze and gilt accents. The top lifts and locks into position to create a serving surface, revealing a gold-leaf interior designed for mixing and presenting cocktails. Brass lattice doors with rosette mounts open to shelved storage, while column-form sides reinforce the neoclassical influence characteristic of Regency revival design.
Compact in scale yet visually substantial, the cabinet was created for apartment and townhouse entertaining—allowing the bar to disappear elegantly when closed and transform into a functional serving station when open. The textile backing behind the grille doors appears to be a later replacement that complements the piece well..
JUNE'S THOUGHTS
From my perspective as a dealer and collector, what I respond to most about this piece is its size and sense of transformation. Closed, it reads as an elegant architectural cabinet; opened, it immediately becomes the center of the room.
Hollywood Regency designers of the late 1960s and 1970s reinterpreted classical European motifs through glamorous finishes and architectural detailing, creating furniture that balanced formality with relaxed modern living. Pieces like this remind us that entertaining was once an event within the home—something revealed rather than constantly on display—and that quiet theatrical quality still feels remarkably current today.
