Louis xvi period roll-top desk with bookcase – circa 1760
an important louis xvi period roll-top desk in solid cuban mahogany, remarkable for the quality of its craftsmanship and the elegance of its proportions. A very fine parisian piece from the second half of the 18th century.
the desk rests on four tapered and fluted legs, terminating in gilt bronze sabots.
it comprises three distinct elements:
an upper section forming a bookcase, opening with two glazed doors (original glass) and three drawers
a roll-top revealing a richly decorated interior with compartments of small drawers
a writing surface unfolding to reveal a leather-covered worktop
the stepped frieze opens with three drawers, while the side panels are decorated with fluting.
the gilt bronze drawer pulls and keyhole escutcheons underscore the overall refinement.
an exceptional piece of furniture, combining functionality, architectural balance, and high-quality craftsmanship.
