Neuchâtel Pendulum Clock with Console, circa 1760-80
This magnificent Neuchâtel pendulum clock with matching wall console dates from around 1770 and presents itself as an outstanding example of late Baroque or early Neoclassical horology from the Neuchâtel region (Switzerland).
The case impresses with its elegant, curved shape and the typical lacquer technique in a vibrant red, richly decorated with delicate bronze appliqués in fire-gilded finish. The ornamentally crafted fittings—including leaf and tendril decorations as well as a magnificently designed crown—reflect the high level of craftsmanship of this era.
The large, white enamel dial features black Roman numerals for the hours and Arabic minute markers, framed by a finely profiled brass ring. The gilded, openwork hands complete the refined overall effect.
The movement is a classic Neuchâtel pendulum clock with an anchor escapement and quarter-hour, half-hour, and hour strike on three bells with five hammers. It can only be triggered by hand-repeating; the clock's automatic trigger mechanism is defective. The clock features an original hand repeater, activated by a side pull, which strikes the hour on demand.
The original, elegant wall bracket is stylistically and color-matched to the clock, creating a harmonious ensemble.
