Probably Italy, circa 1850-1880.

A magnificent piece, both practical and eye-catching. Eighteen wooden ribs in four unusually strong arches give the chair an elegant appearance.

The seat here, unlike other scissor chairs, is solid. It features hand-carved figures of two sterilized dolphins, mythical creatures, facing each other.

The base is decorated with carved animal paws at the front and back, representing stability.

Its armrests are decorated on three sides and bear expressive mythical creatures at the front - almost like a hand rest.

Towards the back, they merge into the artfully carved brackets of the backrest.

The backrest itself is striking. Hand-carved in high relief, it features powerful mythical creatures from the animal kingdom and other meaningful symbols of secular culture. Its back is lightly decorated and can be removed for transport.

A removable crossbar is screwed under the base; this was added later to give the chair even more stability.
