This exquisite Von Schierholz centerpiece captures the exuberance of German Rococo Revival design with a lavish assembly of six full-relief cherubs (putti) supporting a large, reticulated floral bowl. The oversized oval basin is masterfully hand-painted with lush bouquets of summer blooms—roses, pansies, and morning glories—framed by intricate gilt scrollwork and a delicate lattice border. Each of the six dynamic cherubs is modeled in high relief and surrounded by a profusion of individually applied porcelain flowers in soft pastels, a hallmark of the factory’s famed figural work.
Founded in 1817 in Plaue, Thuringia, Von Schierholz became celebrated for its luxurious figural porcelain, continuing the tradition of 18th-century Meissen works. This piece, marked beneath a crown and shield, dates to the mid-20th century (circa 1950s–1970s), representing the factory's commitment to opulent craftsmanship for the international export market. A magnificent statement piece for a grand dining room or entryway.
COLLECTOR'S NOTE:
This particular mark—Crown over Shield with the "Handmalerei" inscription—was primarily used during the post-WWII period when the factory was operating under the Soviet zone (and later East German government, pre-reunification). The high quality and heavy application of gilding visible here demonstrate that even during this era, the factory maintained the labor-intensive standards that made it a rival to Dresden porcelain houses. The technique of applying small, individual porcelain flowers, known as Blumenmalerei or "flower painting," is a specialized, time-consuming craft requiring dedicated porcelain artists. The six cherubs are notably larger and more active than those typically found on the standard four-putti versions of similar Schierholz figural pieces, increasing its dramatic impact and collectability.

There are a few tiny, characteristic chips to the very tips of some applied flower petals, consistent with the age and delicate nature of Schierholz figural work; these are minimal and only noticeable upon very close inspection. No repairs, structural cracks, or significant losses. The hand-painted enamels and heavy gilt accents remain exceptionally vibrant and intact. less
