Val's Dollhouse is proud to present this set of eight Antique nautical motif dinner plates by the American manufacturing leader … Read more Val's Dollhouse is proud to present this set of eight Antique nautical motif dinner plates by the American manufacturing leader in fine chinaware: Lenox, especially for Gump and Company, San Francisco. A broad band of cobalt blue is accented with a generously gold gilt edge and rope motif border. The backdrop is the quintessential creamy white fine porcelain of Lenox. Stunningly bold and understated all at once in a royal cobalt blue that is irreproducible in today's wares due to old firing techniques of the time.
The blue-green laurel leaf mark on the underside indicates production prior to 1930, likely much earlier in the late 19th century (1860's-1880's), for S & G Gump Company. S & G Gump Company was founded in 1861 San Francisco and renamed "Gump's" in the 1880's. Their original San Francisco store was destroyed by the 1906 fire and relocated within the city until 1995.
These plates appear to have been cabinet pieces except for perhaps a handful of uses over their long previous life. Only very minor wear upon close inspection to some of the gold gilt. Outstanding for the age.
