An exceptional 19th-century German aneroid barometer crafted by renowned precision instrument maker Carl Meyer of Coblenz, this piece is not only a functional scientific instrument but also a rich artifact of symbolic and possibly Masonic heritage.
Housed in a beautifully hand-carved black lacquered wooden case with a detailed botanical motif, the barometer features a highly polished brass bezel and a finely printed enamel dial marked with German meteorological terms: Sturm, Viel Regen, Regen, Veränderlich, Schön, Beständig, Sehr Trocken. The exposed mechanism showcases blued screws, a precision coiled spring, and a central adjustment hub with ornamental finishing.
What truly sets this barometer apart is the stamped emblem inside the mechanism: a finely engraved compass above the initials "G" and "L"—a composition unmistakably resonant with Freemasonic symbolism. While the meaning may reference a "Große Loge" (Grand Lodge in German), or perhaps Geometry and Light, its resemblance to the traditional Masonic compass emblem makes this an especially desirable item for collectors of fraternal or esoteric objects.
