This is a rare and exceptional vintage Claycraft tile mural dating to the 1920s, composed of 15 individual 6” x 6” tiles. The mural forms a stunning Spanish Revival scene, rich in historic charm and artistic detail. At the center of the composition is a donkey, flanked by two figures dressed in traditional Spanish-style clothing. Behind them rises a beautifully rendered Spanish arched architectural backdrop, evoking the warmth and romance of early California’s Mission and Mediterranean Revival influences.
Each tile is expertly hand-glazed in the signature earthy tones and soft hues characteristic of Claycraft Potteries, one of the premier tilemakers of the Arts & Crafts and Spanish Revival eras. The scene is vibrant yet aged with grace, showing the fine crackle and surface texture expected in original tiles from this period. The full mural measures approximately 30 inches wide by 18 inches high when assembled.
This piece is not only visually striking but also historically significant—a rare survivor from the golden age of California tile making. It would make an extraordinary focal point for a fireplace surround, a kitchen installation, or as a framed wall art display. Murals of this size, completeness, and subject matter by Claycraft are extremely hard to come by, making this a collector’s dream and a true conversation piece.
