There is nothing more satisfying than being able to rescue treasures that are discarded by those who do not appreciate … Read more There is nothing more satisfying than being able to rescue treasures that are discarded by those who do not appreciate their significance. I'm not pointing fingers, but in this day and age, even with those who have knowledge, will toss pieces of history into dumpsters and oblivion. But thankfully, I was able to save these from a terrible fate and hopefully they will be honored in a new home. Each tile was hand painted in polychrome (many colors). The are quite possibly made by Royal Tichelaar Makkum, the oldest continuously operating ceramics company in the Netherlands, with roots stretching back to 1572 when a Spanish map documented a brick works in Makkum. Upon examination of other tiles made by them of same quality and scenes. The scenes on these particular tiles are of traditional Dutch ships called "skutsje" fishing trade, barges and cargo boats. There is the expected blue "oxhead" motifs in each corner and green waters. The Dutch flag of Red, White and Blue, fly on all their masts. Each tile measures 4" inches on each side. These are at least 52+ years old. Condition wise, there are not cracks on fronts of any. These were obviously installed at one point and do have rough edges with some mortar still attached on some. Versos are in good condition with not a lot of mortar attached. These are a lovely reminder of vintage craftsmanship. See less
